Welcome to HMS Excellent (Whale Island) Home of the ADCC

Welcome to our historic wicket which was laid by sailors in 1892 under the command of CDR Percy Scott, who sent a subscription list around the navy asking sailors to subscribe towards a cricket pitch. He raised enough money to do the job properly with chalk foundations and proper drainage which is now the upper lawn where you will play.

It is very important that all teams invited to play at HMS Excellent, forward a list of all players and spectators via post or by returning this form by e mail.. This is for security on entry to a Naval establishment.

To get to the pitch, clear security at the main gate and park in No 14 car park which is straight over the roundabout and on your right. The gate staff will give you directions.Once parked, walk up the steps for the pitch and pavillion. No parking around the pavillion is permitted.

We have full use of the pavilllion and it's facilities including toilets and showers. The pitch itself is artificial so only rubber spikes are permitted. Nets are available for you to warm up in. Supporters, family and friends are all welcome onto the island which is a lovely venue for a game of cricket and a day out. Please note however that dogs are not permitted on the Island. Teas and refreshments will be provided for a donation of £1 per head.

The Admiral Drake Cricket Club local drinking venue is The Admiral Drake Public House at 8 Silverlock Close, Portsmouth. Telephone 023 9265 1599 for the Public House or 077 5785 4299 for the ADCC hotline. Bikers are especially welcome and it is a fantastic stop off on the way to the ferry port. The pub has live music most Fridays and Saturdays and all are welcome. If you can't find us the directions are given below. We hope that you enjoy your visit and our hospitality and hope to see you again soon.

The Admiral Drake Public House....If you are coming from outside of Portsmouth, Follow the M275 past the "Sails of the South" and the "Tipner Masts" then take the exit for the Continental Ferry Port. As you hit the roundabout under the flyover, take the second exit into Kingston Crescent and then the first right into the Admiral Drake car park.

HMS Excellent (Whale Island)....At the same roundabout, Take the 4th Exit towards the ferry port and then an immediate right which runs parallel to the M275 Northbound. Follow this road as far as possible and you will come to the security barrier at Whale Island. You will need to clear security and ask for directions to the Cricket Pitch.
